the MAGIC brute is sophie dumont, a singer/songwriter and a friend of mine. this compilation is her individual selection of indie-popsongs on occasion of her sister juhle's birthday.
made with sonic foundry's CD architect 5.0, almost all tracks gently pass a harmony, rhythm or even the sound to their follower.
three cover versions, taken from her solo debut album, show sopie's precious guitar skillz: dancing queen, wish you were here and leaving on a jetplane were recorded and produced september 2003 @ himmelblausandburg.

[1] rem - leave - 7:15
composed by Michael Stipe.
taken from "New Adventures In Hi-Fi", ©1996 warner records.

Nothing could be bring me closer
Nothing could be bring me near
Where is the road I follow?
to leave, leave

It's under, under, under my feet
The sea spread out there before me
where do I go where the land touches the sea
There is my trust in what I believe

(chorus)
That's what keeps me,
That's what keeps me,
That's what keeps me down,
To leave, believe it,
Leave it all behind

Shifting the dream
Nothing could bring me further from my old friend time
Shifting the dream
It's charging the scene
I know where I marked the signs
I Suffer the dreams of a world gone mad
I like it like that and I know it

I know it well, ugly and sweet
That temper madness with an even extreme

That's what keeps me
That's what keeps me
That's what keeps me down
I say that I'm a bantam lightweight
I say that I'm a phantom airplane
That never left the ground

(repeat chorus)

Lift me, lift me,
I attain my dream
I lost myself, I lost the
Heartache calling me
I lost myself in sorrow
I lost myself in pain
I lost myself in clarity,
Memory, leave, leave

(repeat chorus 2x)

lift my hands, my eyes are still
I walk into the scene
lift myself in a different place
just Leavin'

I longed for this to take me,
I longed for my release
I waited for the callin'
To leave, leave

Leave, leave
Leavin', leavin'
Leavin', leave

[2] annie lennox - why - 4:59
composed 1992 by annie lennox.
this MTV unplugged recording taken from "cold" (BMG COLD 1, 1992)

How many times do I have to try to tell you
That I'm sorry for the things I've done
But when I start to try to tell you
That's when you have to tell me
Hey... this kind of trouble's only just begun
I tell myself too many times
Why don't you ever learn to keep your big mouth shut
That's why it hurts so bad to hear the words
That keep on falling from your mouth
Falling from your mouth
Falling from your mouth
Tell me...
Why
Why

I may be mad
I may be blind
I may be viciously unkind
But I can still read what you're thinking
And I've heard is said too many times
That you'd be better off
Besides...
Why can't you see this boat is sinking
(this boat is sinking this boat is sinking)
Let's go down to the water's edge
And we can cast away those doubts
Some things are better left unsaid
But they still turn me inside out
Turning inside out turning inside out
Tell me...
Why
Tell me...
Why

This is the book I never read
These are the words I never said
This is the path I'll never tread
These are the dreams I'll dream instead
This is the joy that's seldom spread
These are the tears...
The tears we shed
This is the fear
This is the dread
These are the contents of my head
And these are the years that we have spent
And this is what they represent
And this is how I feel
Do you know how I feel ?
'cause i don't think you know how I feel
I don't think you know what I feel
I don't think you know what I feel
You don't know what I feel

[3] peter gabriel, sting and sinead o'connor - don't give up - 4:23
written 1986 by peter gabriel.
recorded 13oct1990 at the amnesty international benefit show in santiago de chile.

in this proud land we grew up strong
we were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

no fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my face, I've changed my name
but no one wants you when you lose

don't give up
'cos you have friends
don't give up
you're not beaten yet
don't give up
I know you can make it good

though I saw it all around
never thought I could be affected
thought that we'd be the last to go
it is so strange the way things turn

drove the night toward my home
the place that I was born, on the lakeside
as daylight broke, I saw the earth
the trees had burned down to the ground
don't give up
you still have us
don't give up
we don't need much of anything
don't give up
'cause somewhere there's a place
where we belong

rest your head
you worry too much
it's going to be alright
when times get rough
you can fall back on us
don't give up
please don't give up

'got to walk out of here
I can't take anymore
going to stand on that bridge
keep my eyes down below
whatever may come
and whatever may go
that river's flowing
that river's flowing

moved on to another town
tried hard to settle down
for every job, so many men
so many men no-one needs

don't give up
'cause you have friends
don't give up
you're not the only one
don't give up
no reason to be ashamed
don't give up
you still have us
don't give up now
we're proud of who you are
don't give up
you know it's never been easy
don't give up
'cause I believe there's the a place
there's a place where we belong

[4] nick cave - let it be - 3:21
originally composed 1970 by john lennon and paul mcCartney
taken from the "I am sam" soundtrack (BMG 2002)

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right it front of me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer
Let it be
For though they may be parted there is
still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
yeah, there will be an answer
Let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom
Let it be

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow
Let it be
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
There will be an answer
Let it be (3x)

[5] alphaville - forever young - 3:34
from "forever young", wea 1984.
written by gold / lloyd / mertens.

Let's dance in style,
Let's dance for a while
Heaven can wait,
We're only watching the skies
Hoping for the best
But expecting the worst
Are you going to drop the bomb or not?
Let us die young or let us live forever
We don't have the power
But we never say never
Sitting in a sandpit,
Life is a short trip
The music's for the sad men
Can you imagine when this race is won?
Turn our golden faces into the sun
Praising our leaders,
We're getting in tune
The music's played by the madmen

Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever
Forever - and ever

Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever
Forever young

Some are like water
Some are like the heat
Some are a melody and some are the beat
Sooner or later, they all will be gone
Why don't they stay young?
It's so hard to get old without a cause
I don't want to perish like a fading horse
Youth's like diamonds in the sun
And diamonds are forever
So many adventures couldn't happen today
So many songs we forgot to play
So many dreams swinging out of the blue
We'll let them come true

Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever
Forever - and ever

Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever
Forever - and ever

Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever
...

[6] eddie vedder & mike McCready - yellow ledbetter - 5:29
composed 1991 by eddie vedder of pearl jam.
this life recording taken from "tibetan freedom concert", 1997

Unsealed, on a porch a letter sat
Then you said, 'I wanna leave it again'

Once I saw her on a beach of weathered sand
And on the sand I wanna leave it again, yeah...
On a weekend, I wanna wish it all away, yeah...
And they called and I said that I want what I said...
And then I call out again...

And the reason, oughta' leave her calm, I know
I said, 'I know what I wear, not a boxer or the bag'

Ah yeah...can you see them?
Out on the porch, yeah, but they don't wave
I see them, round the front way, yeah...
And I know and I know I don't want to stay

Make me cry...

I see, ooh...I don't know why there's something else
I wanna drum it all away
Oh, I said, I don't, I don't know a-where there's a boxer or the bag'

Ah yeah...can you see them?
Out on the porch, yeah, but they don't wave
I see them, round the front way, yeah...
And I know, and I know, I don't wanna stay alone...

I don't wanna stay...yeah...
I don't wanna stay...
I don't wanna stay...
I don't, don't wanna, oh...yeah...ooh...ohh...

[7] dave matthews band - no rain - 4:03
originally composed 1992 by blind melon
taken from the internet.

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain
I like watchin' the puddles gather rain
And all I can do is just pour some tea for two
and speak my point of view
But it's not sane, It's not sane

I just want some one to say to me
I'll always be there when you wake
Ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today
So stay with me and I'll have it made

And I don't understand why I sleep all day
And I start to complain that there's no rain
And all I can do is read a book to stay awake
And it rips my life away, but it's a great escape
escape...escape...escape...
All I can say is that my life is pretty plain
ya don't like my point of view
ya think I'm insane
Its not sane...it's not sane.

[8] pixies - where is my mind - 3:43
composed by black francis.
taken from the 1988 lp "surfer rosa"

Ooooooh - stop!

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind [3x]

Way out in the water
See it swimmin'

I was swimmin' in the Carribean
Animals were hiding behind the rock
Except the little fish
But they told me, he swears
Tryin' to talk to me to me to me

Where is my mind [3x]

Way out in the water
See it swimmin' ?

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
If there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind [3x]

Ooooh
With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Ooooh
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Ooooh
Ooooh

[9] silverchair - ana's song (open fire) - 3:36
composed by daniel johns.
taken from "neon ballroom" (sony 1999)

Please die Ana
For as long as you're here we're not
You make the sound of laughter
and sharpened nails seem softer

And I need you now somehow
And I need you now somehow

Open fire on the needs designed
On my knees for you
Open fire on my knees desires
What I need from you

Imagine a pageant
In my head the flesh seems thicker
Sandpaper tears corrode the filth

And I need you now somehow
And I need you now somehow

Open fire on the needs designed
On my knees for you
Open fire on my knees desires
What I need from you

And you're my obsession
I love you to the bones
And Ana wrecks your life
Like an Anorexia life

Open fire on the needs designed
On my knees for you
Open fire on my knees desires
What I need from you
Open fire on the needs designed
Open fire on my knees desires
On my knees for you

[10] silverchair - miss you love - 3:54
composed by daniel johns.
taken from "neon ballroom" (sony 1999)

Millionaire say got a big shot deal
And thrown it all away
But but i'm not too sure how I'm supposed to feel
Or what I'm supposed to say

But I'm not not sure
Not too sure how it feels
To handle every day
And I miss you love

Make room for the prey
Cause I'm coming in with what I wanna say
But it's gonna hurt
And I love the pain
A breeding ground for hate

But I'm not not sure
Not too sure how it feels
To handle every day
Like the one that just passed in the crowds of all the
people

Remember today, I've no respect for you
And I miss you love
And I miss you love

I love the way you love
But I hate the way I'm supposed to love you back and
It's just a fad part of the teen, teenage angst brigade
and....

I'm not, not sure
Not too sure how it feels
To handle every day
Like the one that just passed in the crowds of all the
people

Remember today, I've no respect for you
And I miss you love
And I miss you love

Remember today, I've no respect for you
And I miss you love
And I miss you

I love the way you love, but I hate the way I'm supposed to
love you back

[11] stone temple pilots - plush (acoustic) - 3:49
written by scott weiland, robert deLeo.
released on lp "core" ©1992 atlantic rec.
this recording taken from "MTV unplugged"

And I feel that time's a wasted go
So where ya going to tomorrow?
And I see that these are lies to come
Would you even care?
And I feel it
And I feel it

Where ya going to tomorrow?
Where ya going with that mask I found?
And I feel and I feel
When the dogs begin to smell her
Will she smell alone?

And I feel so much depends on the weather
So is it raining in your bedroom?
And I see that these are the eyes of disarray
Would you even care?

And I feel it
And she feels it

Where ya going to tomorrow?
Where ya going with that mask I found?
And I feel, and I feel
When the dogs begin to smell her
Will she smell alone?

When the dogs do find her
Got time, time, to wait for tomorrow

[12] björk - dancing queen - 2:35
words and music composed by benny andersson, björn ulvæus
this recording from "cover me", a björk bootleg labelled "R-Duck 9809"
that claims this song be from some early sugarcubes demo.

(Uh-uh) You can dance you can jive
Having the time of your life (uh-uh)
See that girl, watch that queen
Dig in the Dancing Queen
Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for the place to go
Where they play the night music
Getting in the swing
You come to look for a king
Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music's high
With a bit of rock music
Everything is fine
You're on the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance

You are the Dancing Queen
Young and sweet only seventeen
Dancing Queen
watch that scene on the tambourine (oh yeah!)
You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life (uh-uh)
See that girl, watch that scene
Dig in the Dancing Queen...

[13] the MAGIC brute - dancing queen (chorus) - 0:35
words and music composed by benny andersson, björn ulvæus
this recording is a vocal demo from soffi dumont.

You are the Dancing Queen
Young and sweet only seventeen
Dancing Queen
Feel the beat from the tambourine (oh yeah!)
You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life (uh-uh)
See that girl, watch the scene
Dig in the Dancing Queen

[14] the MAGIC brute - wish you were here - 3:22
originally composed by roger waters of pink floyd.
this cover version of sophie dumont taken from forthcoming debut album,
recorded and produced 2003 by melchior blausand at himmelblausandburg, cologne, germany.

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

[15] lauryn hill - his eye is on the sparrow - 4:20
music and lyrics by mrs c.d martin and charles h gabriel.
taken from original soundtrack "sister act 2: back in the habit",

why should I feel discouraged
why should the shadows come
why should my heart feel lonely
and long for heaven and home

when Jesus is my portion
a constant friend is He
His eye is on the sparrow
and i know he watches over me
his eye is on the sparrow
and i know he watches me

i sing because i'm happy
i sing because i'm free
His eye is on the sparrow
and i know he watches me (he watches me)
His eye is on the sparrow
and i know he watches
i know he watches
i know he watches me

I sing because I'm happy
I sing because I'm free
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me (He watches me)
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me (He watches me)
He watches me
I know
He watches
Me

[16] tricky - hell is round the corner - 3:40
taken from his debut album "maxinquaye", ©1995 island

I stand firm for a soil
I lick a rock off foil
So reduce me, seduce me,
Dress me up in stüssy.
Hell is round the corner where I shelter.
Isms and schisms, we’re living on a skelter
If you believe I’ll deceive common sense says you are thief
Let me take you down the corridors of my life.

And when you walk, do you walk to your preference
No need to answer ’till...

I take further evidence.
I seem to need a reference to get residence
A reference to your preference to say,
I’m a good neighbour, I trudge,
So judge me for my labour,
Lobotomy ensures my good behavior
The constant struggle ensures my insanity.
Passing the indifference ensures the struggle for my family
We’re hungry, beware of our appetite.
Distant drums bring the news of a kill tonight.
The kill which I share with my passengers.
We take our fill, take our fill, take a feel.

I stand firm for a soil
I lick a rock off foil
So reduce me, seduce me,
Dress me up in stüssy.
Confused by different memories,
Details of asian remedies
Conversations, of what’s become of enemies.
My brain thinks bomb-like,
So I listen he’s a calm type.
As I grow
And as I grow, I grow collective.
Before the move sit on the perspective.
Mr. quail’s in the crevice
And watches from the precipice.
Imperial passage.
Heat from the sun someday slowly passes,
Until then, you have to live with yourself
Until then, you have to live with yourself
I stand firm for a soil
Lick a rock off foil
So reducee me, seduce me,
Dress me up in stüssy.

Hell is round the corner where I shelter.
Isms and schisms, we’re living a skelter
If you believe I’ll deceive and common sense says you are the thief
Let me take you down the corridors.

My brain thinks bomb-like, bomb-like
My brain thinks bomb-like, bomb-like, bomb-like
My brain thinks bomb-like,
Beware of our appetite.

[17] reamonn - supergirl - 3:49
composed by reamonn. taken from the 1999 single "supergirl".

Supergirl
Supergirl
You can tell by the way
She walks that she’s my girl
You can tell by the way she talks she rules the world
You can see in her eyes that no one is her chi
She’s my girl my supergirl
And then she’d say it’s ok I got lost on the way
But I’m a supergirl and supergirls don’t cry
And she’d say it’s allright I got home late last night
But I’m a supergirl and supergirls just fly
And then she’d say that nothing can go wrong
When you’re in love what can go wrong
And then she’d laugh the night time into the day
Pushing her fears further along
And then she’d say it’s ok I got lost on the way
But I’m a supergirl and supergirls don’t cry
And she’d say it’s allright I got home late last night
But I’m a supergirl and supergirls just fly
Then she’d shout down the line tell me she’s got no more time
Cause she’s a supergirl and supergirls don’t cry
Then she’d scream in my face tell me to leave leave this place
Cause she’s a supergirl and supergirls just fly
She’s a supergirl a supergirl
She’s sowing seeds she’s burning trees
She’s sowing seeds she’s burning trees
She’s a supergirl a supergirl
A supergirl my supergirl

[18] the nylons - the lion sleeps tonight - 3:42
based on the south-african zulu folk-song "wimoweh".
originally composed 1939 by South African Solomon Linda,
NOT by the weavers in the 50ies (first popular adaption),
NOT 1961 by the tokens (george david weiss, hugo peretti, and luigi creatore), who had a #1 hit with it!

performed by the canadian a capella group "the nylons" on their 1982 debut album, "the nylons"

note this CNN news item of aug.6th, 2001:

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- The man who wrote the song that would become the megahit "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" died penniless. But there's a renewed effort to give his family its due, Reuters reports.

The original recording of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," composed 62 years ago by South African Solomon Linda, is being released again to benefit his three daughters and their families in Soweto, near Johannesburg.

The value of all the songwriter's royalties and associated revenues generated by the song is estimated at $15 million, according to Reuters. It has been used in 13 movies and several TV commercials.

The most popular American version of the song is the 1961 hit by the Tokens. Folk singer Pete Seeger introduced it to a wider audience with his folk rendition in 1951.

lyrics

In the jungle the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight
In the jungle the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight

Near the village the peaceful village the lion sleeps tonight
Near the village the peaceful village the lion sleeps tonight

Hush my darling don’t cry my darling the lion sleeps tonight
Hush my darling don’t fear my darling the lion sleeps tonight

[19] the MAGIC brute - leaving on a jetplane - 3:21
words and music ©1967 by john denver, cherry lane music publishings co.
originally released on his album "rhymes and reasons".
this cover version of sophie dumont taken from forthcoming debut album,
recorded and produced 2003 by melchior blausand at himmelblausandburg, cologne, germany.

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go,
I'm standing here outside your door,
I hate to wake you up to say good-bye.
But the dawn is breakin',
It's early morn,
The taxi's waitin'
He's blowin' his horn,
Already I'm so lonesome I could die.

So kiss me and smile for me,
Tell me that you'll wait for me,
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane,
Don't know when I'll be back again,
Oh, babe, I hate to go.

There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around,
I tell you now they don't mean a thing.
Ev'ry place I go I'll think of you,
Ev'ry song I sing I'll sing for you,
When I come back I'll bring your wedding ring.

So kiss me and smile for me,
Tell me that you'll wait for me,
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane,
Don't know when I'll be back again,
Oh, babe, I hate to go.

Now the time has come to leave you,
One more time let me kiss you,
Then close your eyes I'll be on my way.
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone,
About the times I won't have to say:

Kiss me and smile for me.
Tell me that you'll wait for me,
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane,
Don't know when I'll be back again,
Oh, babe, I hate to go.
I'm leavin' on a jet plane,
Don't know when I'll be back again,
Oh, babe, I hate to go.
